SERVICE
The Service
Recovery Church Daytona North meets every Monday evening at 7:00 PM for a time of worship, fellowship, and spiritual growth. Each service includes worship songs, open share, serenity crosses, and an altar call for prayer with the prayer team. On the first Monday of every month, an Anniversary Celebration is held with food, fellowship, and a guest speaker, followed by open share, serenity crosses, and anniversary crosses. The second week features Dr. Sutton’s step video in alignment with the monthly step, while the third week offers a teaching on God’s Word and the step of the month. The fourth week focuses on God’s Word and the principle of the month, and when there is a fifth Monday, the service includes an open discussion on both the step and principle of the month.

Outreach Ministry Lead
I was raised in a church-going family and attended regularly until my early teens, when I discovered the “benefits” of alcohol for an awkward kid. That was soon followed by marijuana, speed, and any other drugs I could find. By the time I graduated high school, I was well on my way to becoming a full-blown alcoholic and addict.
I was first introduced to recovery by the courts in the mid-80s but didn’t think I had a problem. Fast forward to 1990 — by that time, I couldn’t afford my drug of choice and was living wherever I could crash for a few days, often in my car. I still managed to make it to work most days, but the missed days were becoming more frequent, and I knew I was running out of chances.
One morning, I woke up with no idea where I was or how I’d gotten there. The sun was already up, and I knew I was hours late for work. I called my employer and told him I needed help. He was a partier too and was well aware of my struggles, so he sent a coworker, Alan S., who was sober and in AA, to come get me. Alan helped me get into detox and a subsequent outpatient program.
It took some time, but I eventually started putting together days of sobriety while going to meetings and working the steps with a sponsor. I accumulated six and a half years of sobriety while chairing meetings and serving as a Group Service Representative.
In 1997, after earning my USCG Captain’s License, I secured a mate’s position on a sea-going tug hauling military cargo to a base in the Bahamas. By the second trip, I found myself sitting in a beachside bar with the crew and a drink in my hand. I drank daily until I woke up again behind bars — this time at Sharps Correctional in Brevard County, Florida.
After that, I resumed attending meetings and had no desire to repeat the cycle. I worked the steps with my sponsor again and made meetings as often as my job at sea allowed.
By 2001, I was married and working as Master on an offshore supply vessel servicing oil rigs in the Gulf of Mexico. During a storm at sea — and storms in my personal life — I accepted Jesus Christ as my Lord and Savior, alone in a dark room. When I got up off the floor, I had never felt less alone. From that moment, all desire for alcohol and drugs left me — and it has never returned, even after losing my wife of 21 years following a long battle with kidney failure.
Though I had no desire to drink, I struggled with severe depression and didn’t know where to turn. My stepson, Tim B., a pastor at my home church, suggested I check out Recovery Church, saying he thought there was one in our town. I looked it up and discovered that Recovery Church Palm Coast was holding a beach baptism just down the street from me.
On July 2, 2022, I attended the baptism and met my forever family — people who carried me until I could walk again with God’s help. That day, I met Will and Maribeth Motosicky, as well as Nick and Chrissy Polovich. Nick became my sponsor and has stayed in touch with me every single day since.
Although I tried returning to work for a while, my heart was no longer in it. I knew God was calling me to something new. I took early retirement, sold my house, and moved to the country — a place where recovery is much needed.
God has since blessed me with a wife in recovery who shares my heart for ministry to the recovery community, the homeless, and anyone struggling in life. He has united us with Broken Chains JC and Recovery Church Movement, both of which have transformed our lives.
We now look forward to serving as Ministry Outreach Leaders — or in any capacity — alongside the Recovery Church Daytona North team.

Deborah Lunsford
Outreach Ministry Lead
Introduction
It is both an honor and a blessing for me to serve as a member of the leadership team for the Daytona North Recovery Church Movement. My passion for recovery is deeply rooted in my own journey of healing and transformation, which I have experienced through Jesus Christ and participation in 12-step recovery programs.
Personal Journey to Recovery
In 2002, God guided me to Alcoholics Anonymous (AA) and Narcotics Anonymous (NA) at a time when I was battling cocaine addiction, unresolved childhood trauma, and overwhelming brokenness. My clean date is March 18, 2012. For many years, I struggled to escape pain and dysfunction by seeking approval, pursuing relationships, and engaging in self-sabotaging behaviors—patterns I learned while growing up in a home without a relationship with Jesus Christ
Early Faith Experience
As a child, I first encountered Christ through a church outreach program that invited my family to Saturday services and provided transportation to Sunday worship. At the age of twelve, in 1976, I accepted Jesus into my life.
Christ-Centered Recovery
In 2018, I was introduced to Celebrate Recovery, a Christ-centered recovery program, where I experienced baptism in the Holy Spirit. This encounter profoundly deepened my love for Jesus and strengthened my walk with Him. The Holy Spirit has transformed my life and continues to change me in ways that only God can accomplish.
Joining Recovery Church Movement
After relocating from Georgia to Florida in 2023, I became involved with the Recovery Church Movement. I was amazed by how God was using this ministry to change lives, serving as a bridge between AA/NA and the Church. Since joining, I have remained actively involved and have witnessed countless lives redeemed and transformed through the blood and resurrection of Jesus Christ and the 12-step process.
Passion for Outreach and Helping Others
I am especially passionate about helping others, particularly women, discover freedom from past trauma and unhealthy life choices. It brings me great joy to witness their growth in their relationship with Christ and to see them experience the same healing and transformation that I have found.

Facilitator
I come from a long line of alcoholics and addicts, and for many years, I wasn’t immune to that cycle of pain and coping. On March 14, 2012, I married my husband, Shawn, and together we built a beautiful, blended family of five children and, eventually, four grandchildren. Life brought many blessings — but also deep heartbreak.
In May 2020, our world was shattered when our 16-year-old son passed away from fentanyl poisoning. The devastating loss of a child sent me into a spiral of grief, and I turned to alcohol to numb the unbearable pain.
By 2022, God began stirring in our hearts that change was coming. Shawn told me that God was calling us to Florida, and during Biketoberfest that year, he said we would be moving before Bike Week 2023. When God tells you to move — you move. I left my hospital management career, where I had overseen multiple departments including the Emergency Department, and prepared to step into a new chapter.
On March 1, 2023, just days before Bike Week, we relocated from Lorain, Ohio, to Bunnell, Florida, to take over Shawn’s grandfather’s recovery community. Founded in 1985, the community has stood as a beacon of hope for those struggling with addiction, and we knew God had chosen us to continue that legacy.
In Florida, I began working as a manager for a mental health and substance abuse organization while also connecting with others in recovery, hearing their stories, and finding fellowship. Through prayer and reflection, I came to fully recognize that I, too, was an alcoholic — especially in the years following our son’s passing. On February 14, 2025, I embraced that truth and claimed it as my sobriety anniversary. From that day forward, I committed to working the steps, living in recovery, and growing in faith as a member of Recovery Church Ormond Beach.
My walk with God has been lifelong, though not without struggles. I gave my life to Christ in 2014 and pursued Biblical Studies at a local college before grief pulled me away from both church and school. But God’s calling never left. Through prayer and obedience, I came to see that Daytona North needed a church that would meet people right where they are — a church without stigma, without judgment, and without hate. A place of understanding, compassion, and hope.
Out of that vision, Recovery Church Daytona North was born.
Every step of my journey — from loss and brokenness to healing and renewal — has revealed the truth of Romans 8:28-31. Today, I live with an unshakable belief that God can transform even the darkest seasons into testimonies of His grace. My mission is to carry that light forward — to bring hope to the hurting, healing to the broken, and the love of Christ to all who are still suffering.
