Alcoholism & addiction landed me in both physical jails as well as a constant mental prison until June 25th 1997, when I got drunk & high for the last time even though I did not want to.
On July 23rd 1997, I got down on my knees out of humility for the first time, possibly ever & asked the God of my understanding to remove any defect of character blocking me from being of service to him and my fellows. I sat back in a recliner & became paralyzed physically for an undetermined period of time with a fog or haze from my mouth. I immediately thought A. Don’t tell anyone. B. I’ve lost my mind.
After that I stepped outside & what I noticed was everything was magnified with color in a previously dark world & I was walking almost as if I was on air. Definitely a lightened load.
What I have come to understand today is that the Holy Spirit can touch us & enter us whenever the Holy Spirit wants just as God the Father, Holy Spirit is also sovereign, despite my permission.
Prior to this experience, I used to think that people who got jammed up & all of the sudden found Jesus were weak & pathetic. My arrogance & pride were a barrier keeping me from fruit. Now what was I to do?
The big book of AA tells us that if we attack recovery with half the fervor we did at getting high that we would come to know a new freedom & happiness. We will not regret the past nor wish to shut the door on it. We will comprehend the word serenity & we will know peace. That is my life today, sharing my experience, strength & hope.
My favorite verse is Proverbs 3:5-6. Trust in the Lord with all your heart and do not lean on your own understanding. In all ways acknowledge Him, and He will make your paths straight. In other words, just because I think it, doesn’t make it so.
Today I have a purpose & that purpose is to give hope to men who know that there has to be something better or at least different from doing the same thing over & over expecting different results.
Jesus can & will meet you if you do an about face & humbly ask Him.
